Oriel launches SafeTouch antimicrobial coating

As the science community rallies behind a vaccine, the label and packaging industry is funnelling its R&D efforts into coatings that inhibit or offer durable resistance to various types of harmful microbes.

Oriel Printing, based in Hull, has developed, SafeTouch™, an antimicrobial coating powered by Biomaster technology which can be applied to a wide range of retail packaging and point-of-sale products.

SafeTouch™ is designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi on substrates without affecting the colour or transparency. The technology is effective for the life of the coating, working 24 hours a day.

Oriel recently won a contract to supply ASDA stores with sticky labels, protected with Biomaster antimicrobial technology, which are currently being rolled out across all their stores in a bid to complement their other hygienic installations.

The labels are on white removable self-adhesive vinyl and printed in four colour process and coated with Oriel’s SafeTouch antimicrobial gloss UV varnish. Although commonly used in the healthcare and food processing industries, these labels are suitable for any application and industry.

Richard Simms, Oriel Managing Director says: “this pandemic has really heightened people’s awareness of the importance of good hygienic practices, so for the relatively small uplift in cost on a product, why would companies not want to provide their customers with goods that have these benefits? It naturally improves brand confidence and is a no brainer for packaging”.
